Where to Stay in Barcelona: Best Areas + Hotel Options!
Where to stay in Barcelona! As with most places, where you stay can make or break a trip. But, the best place for you also depends on your priorities.
As a mid-budget, fast traveler I will pay up a little bit to be in a central location. Being within walking distance or close to a metro can really save time when exploring a city for just a couple days.
However, if you are planning to be in the city for a week, you can slow down and choose a location that is a little further out. Or, in Barcelona’s case, on the beach.
So here is information on the layout of Barcelona, best, central locations, best beachside area, a good quiet option (for those who dislike crowds!) plus hotel recommendations that are mid-budget for each area!

Barcelona Layout: Prominent Areas & Neighborhoods (With a map)
Barcelona is large and a little spread out. No matter which area you choose to stay, you are going to have to utilize public transportation and your feet (a lot) to visit the best sites.
The popular Park Güell and Sagrada Familia are going to be some of the most north sites in Barcelona. Staying here puts you close to these two popular sites and in a quieter area. But, also pretty far from central Barcelona.
Barcelona is unique in that it has a beach close to the city center. This is a great spot for anyone wanting a breezy, beachy city-break. However, it is also a little outside the city center.
The most popular area is to stay smack-dab in the center of Barcelona. While you are going to have more crowds here, you are also going to be within walking distance to a lot of sites and restaurants or close to public transportation.
Be Considerate When Choosing Your Accommodation
Barcelona is having a housing crisis. People buying up apartments for short term rentals (AirBnb, etc) is driving the cost of living up for locals.
While AirBnBs can be a fine option in other cities, it has taken a toll on Barcelona.
So much so, that locals were protesting tourism in their city.
We all know that cities thrive on tourism, but mass tourism can have negative impacts.
So, for Barcelona, I recommend booking hotels (whether chain or boutique) in order to bring money to the city without negatively impacting the locals.
This will especially be true in 2026, as the Sagrada Familia is due to be completed after 144 years!
Also, on that note, you are going to want to book your accommodations further IN ADVANCE than you may normally book!

Where to Stay In Barcelona: Central Locations
I’ll start with the areas that I would choose to stay in as a fast traveler who only spent one day in Barcelona (on my way to Menorca!)
My priorities were being central so I could maximize my time during my one day in Barcelona!
Plaça de Catalunya is one of the main squares of Barcelona. And, coming off of it is La Rambla, one of the most popular streets of Barcelona.
This area is going to be CENTRAL, but also quite busy.
La Rambla
La Rambla street is the most popular street in Barcelona. It is a pedestrian-only street full of restaurants, shops, bars and outdoor seating.
Being in Barcelona for only one day, this is where I opted to stay to have plenty of restaurants nearby and things in walking distance.
Only visiting for one day too? Here is a great way to spend one day in Barcelona!
My experience: It was definitely centrally located and convenient. However, La Rambla is also BUSY. It was quite noisy with the crowds below.
This wasn’t a huge deal to me because I am a deep sleeper. However, if you are a light sleeper, I would opt to stay a street or two off of La Rambla.
My Hotel Recommendations on La Rambla

Hotel Lloret Ramblas
Where I opted to stay– located on the north side of La Rambla street. Balcony was noisy, but very central.

Exe Ramblas Boqueria
Prices vary when you book and things sell out. This is another more affordable option on La Rambla street!

Gothic Quarter
La Rambla street runs right along the edge of the Gothic Quarter. If you want to be close to La Rambla street, but not ON it, I would stay in the Gothic Quarter!
Honestly, after experiencing the hustle and bustle of La Rambla, this is probably where I would stay if I were to visit Barcelona again.
The Gothic Quarter is named after the large amount of well-preserved Gothic architecture and is a beautiful place to stay.
In this area, you will be within walking distance to La Rambla street, the Basilica de Santa Maria and the Cathedral de Barcelona and only about a 12 minute walk to the Plaça de Catalunya.
The beach is also ~a 20 minute walk or 15 minutes away via public transportation.
The Gothic Quarter can be a bit pricey; I would choose to stay at Hotel Rialto due to prices compared to other hotels.
My Hotel Recommendations in the gothic Quarter

Hotel Rialto
A more affordable hotel option in the Gothic Quarter- this is where I would choose to stay!

Hotel Gótico
Another option in the Gothic Square- a little more pricey than Hotel Rialto, but still mid-budget.

Eixample
Eixample neighborhood is a little less “central” than the Gothic Quarter, but still close enough to be within walking distance of La Rambla street.
The Plaça de Catalunya is about a 15 minute walk to the Eixample neighborhood (but about a 30 minute walk to the Gothic Quarter.)
Exiample is where you will find Casa Batlló, Antoni Gaudís famous house and museum.
It is known for more of its luxury options. However, you can stay here without breaking the bank if you are on the upper end of mid-budget traveling.
If you are going to stay in this area, I recommend trying to stay near the southern edge of the neighborhood to be closer to the popular, more central areas.
I would choose to stay at Hotel Catalonia Eixample 1864!
My Hotel Recommendations in Eixample

Hotel Catalonia Eixample 1864
This is where I would stay. It is a little farther north, but has a rooftop pool on a more affordable budget

Hotel NH Collection Barcelona Grand Hotel
A higher-budget hotel located on the south edge of Eixample (~$60-70 USD more than Hotel Catalonia.)

Where to Stay in Barcelona Near the Beach
One of the biggest perks of Barcelona is its proximity to the beach from the city center. If you are headed to Barcelona for the beach, you can also opt to stay closer to it rather than the city center.
Playa de la Barceloneta
Playa de la Barceloneta is the closest, most centrally located beach in Barcelona. If I were going to stay near the beach in Barcelona, this is where I would stay.
There are plenty of shops, restaurants and beachside clubs in this area making it convenient since you are a bit outside the city center.
However, know that this is also going to be a popular spot, so prepare for crowds.
And, you are probably going to have to pay up to stay in this area.
As I research while writing this, this area books up QUICK. AND, there are very limited HOTEL options; most options are rented out apartments.
A relatively affordable hotel in this area is Hotel 54 Barceloneta.
The other hotels are either going to be pricey(er) or just north of the highway that runs between old town and the beach (so about a 15 minute walk to the beach.)
My Hotel Recommendations at Playa de la Barceloneta

Hotel 54 Barceloneta
A little pricey, as most hotels in this area are. But a nice, clean hotel with a rooftop view!

Hotel Del Mar
Hotel Del Mar is located further north, but still reasonably priced.

Where to Stay in Barcelona for a Quiet Experience
If you are absolutely opposed to crowds, you can stay north of the city center and find quieter, more local neighborhoods.
Gràcia
One of the best areas to stay in for a quieter feel is Gràcia. Though it is located quite far north compared to the Gothic Quarter, beach and Eixample, it has very important sites nearby.
Just north of Gràcia is Park Güell, a must-visit while in Barcelona.
The Sagrada Familia is also within a 20-25 minute walk, depending on where you stay in Gràcia (whereas it is a 40 minute walk from the Gothic Quarter.)
As this is mostly a residential area, there aren’t as many hotel options.
I would choose Hotel BestPrice Gràcia or Hotel Travessera if it is booked!
My Hotel Recommendations in Gràcia

Hotel BestPrice Gràcia
A nice, reasonably priced hotel in the middle of Gràcia!

Hotel Travessera
A comparably-priced hotel that is located a bit north of Gràcia, closer to Park Güell.
A More Detailed Review of Hotel Lloret Ramblas- Where I Opted to Stay
I traveled to Barcelona as a solo traveler in July (so $$$$.) Again, my priority was staying central, but also without forking out a million dollars for just one night.
I booked Hotel Lloret Ramblas, located on the northern end of La Rambla street.
It is a 3-star hotel that I booked pretty last minute (in May for my July trip) and paid 147 euros with taxes ($173 USD.) It was definitely the best deal I found with a central location last minute.
Hotel Lloret Pros & Cons
Location: Pro- Very Central
Price: Pro- More affordable than many central hotels
Comfort: Conish- Bed was hard, but the room was a descent size
Noise: Con- Noisy with the La Rambla-sided room
The foyer and reception seem to have been updated and, according to Trip Advisor, some rooms have been updated. However, my room had not. It was pretty basic and the bed was a little hard.
However, it had a small balcony that overlooked La Rambla street and was generally clean.
Overall, if you are looking for an affordable hotel in a central location, it does the trick! Just don’t expect luxury.
The balcony did make the room more noisy, so if you are a light sleeper you may request a room on the other side of the hotel, though.

Final Thoughts on Where to Stay in Barcelona
The best option on where to stay in Barcelona is going to depend on your priorities. If being central is your priority, stay near La Ramba street or the Gothic Quarter.
If you want to be beachside, stay as near to Playa de la Barceloneta that you can afford. And, if you want a quieter area, go north to Grácia!
