How to Get Around Menorca: Public Transportation and More!

How to get around Menorca! One thing I love about Menorca is that it is smaller (1/5th of the size of Mallorca) and, thus, a little easier to navigate. And, you have a couple of different options for getting around the island.

Your best option (based on convenience and price) will vary depending on what you plan to do and where you plan to stay.

I took a short trip from work and planned an itinerary that involved exploring as much of the island as I could in 5 days.

However, if you plan to stay at a resort and spend most of your time around the beach and surrounding area, your best form of transportation may be different than mine.

Here are your options for getting around the island, perks and details of each, when each will be your best option, and my personal opinion on best way to get around.

How to Get Around Menorca Overview

You have options when it comes to getting around Menorca: rent a car, take a bus or take a taxi.

There are perks to each form of transportation and definite downfalls to each as well. Whichever is best for you depends on if:

  • Saving money is a priority
  • Getting to the hard-to-reach places of the island is a priority
  • Or convenience is priority

As a solo traveler to Menorca, I attempted to get around the island as affordably and conveniently as possible (I initially tried to avoid renting a car.) However, I quickly learned this wasn’t the best option for me.

When I landed in Menorca, I opted to taxi to my first hotel out of convenience. The next day I opted to take a bus to save some money. By the third day, I decided to rent a car for the remainder of the trip.

Best Way to Get Around Menorca

After trying all three forms of transportation on the island, I will say renting a car (or scooter) is by far the best way to get around Menorca.

Buses are slow, taxis are pricey and cars give you the freedom to explore the island on YOUR time.

Perk to Renting a Car: Efficiency & Convenience

There are SO MANY beaches to explore on the island of Menorca. And to get to them, you often can’t drive along the coast directly from one to the other.

You have to drive inland to the main highway and then make your way back to the coast via another road.

This means it can be slow-going to get from one beach to the other and trying to do this via bus will be slow (but no impossible.)

Having a car means you get to get up and go when you want, leave when you want and generally have more ease in seeing the island.

Logistics of Renting a Car in Menorca

Renting a car in Menorca is simple.

I recommend (after learning the hard way) to rent your car at the airport when you land.

This will save you money on a taxi to your hotel and have you prepped for adventure the next day.

I rented my car through DiscoverCars and opted to use Autos Menorca. This is a popular, local place to rent cars in Menorca.

However, it IS located off the airport grounds.

Therefore, to pick up your car, you will have to take a shuttle from the airport to the main location. But the process of picking up the car is quick and efficient and the staff was friendly and helpful during pick-up and drop-off (even when I had to drop off SUPER early in the morning.)

How To Get Around Menorca Without a Car

I know some people are just not fans of renting cars when abroad, whether from fear of driving or the price tag that comes with it.

If you really don’t want to rent a car, you can still see a lot of the island of Menorca. To explore the island you will either:

  • A) Have to be more patient when relying on the bus (and maybe add a day or two to your itinerary)
  • B) Be prepared to spend money on taxis if a bus doesn’t sound appealing or
  • C) Take tours to explore the island

How to Get Around Menorca via Bus

There is a bus system that runs on the island of Menorca and it is definitely the cheapest way to get around Menorca.

A bus ride is only a couple of euros (cash only paid for on the bus.) Even if you want to take several bus rides a day, you can still see a lot of Menorca for a very reasonable price via bus.

The bus system really goes to most of the highlights on the island. In addition to going to the major cities, it also goes to several of the beach towns on the island as well.

However, the problem is the bus schedule and route options.

Many of the routes require a bus change and, depending on where you are starting from, some of the routes don’t begin until around 9am.

To say it is not an efficient way to see the island is a bit of an understatement. Its certainly a doable way to see the island; just not in a quick manner.

Here is a list of bus routes and timetables for the routes.

How to Get Around Menorca via Taxi

Taking a taxi can definitely be a convenient way to get around Menorca. They are abundant near the airport and the receptionist at my hotel even helped to arrange for one to be at my hotel at a certain time to switch cities.

However, taxis are NOT cheap on the island.

Approximate Price: I spent 22 euros on a 15 minute ride to my hotel and 43 euros on a taxi from my hotel to an excursion.

After these two trips, I quickly decided that paying for taxis would not be the way for me to see the island!

Now, if you just need transportation from the airport to your resort where you plan to spend your week at the beach, a taxi is definitely a convenient and relatively affordable way to get to your hotel.

Otherwise, if you really want to visit different beaches, take hikes, see different cities, etc, taking a taxi can be convenient but PRICEY.

See the Island Via Guided Tours

Obviously, another way to explore the island is to take excursions. This isn’t really a way to “get around the island,” but it is a way to SEE the island.

There are loads of boat tours, mostly along the southern coast (like the one I took) but also along the north coast. You can also take inland tours like the 7-hour full day trip around the island to Ciutadella, Fornells and Monte Toro.

If your priority is convenience (without worry of price ๐Ÿ™ƒ) you can see a lot of island without having to do any planning; just hopping on a tour and letting someone else take care of the logistics.

If someone asked me the best way to get around Menorca, this is NOT the advice I would give.

Though I do HIGHLY recommend taking a boat tour (recommend this one!) because the south coast is so incredible, there is a lot of island to see that you won’t be able to see via tours.

Final Thoughts on How to Get Around Menorca

I found that having a car made exploring Menorca SO much easier.

However, if you don’t want to rent a car you can still manage to explore the island. In this instance, I recommend staying either in a beachside area or city (whichever you prefer) with several things to do in walking distance and a good amount of bus routes.

Either way, you are going to love exploring Menorca!
