About Tembeling Beach and Spring
Tembeling Beach (often called Tembeling Beach and Forest) is a beach located on the west side of Nusa Penida with a fresh water spring that feeds into a natural pool . Unlike the Batur Natural Hot Springs, Tembeling is a cool, refreshing spring that is fed by water from under the mountain.
The pool is actually a man-made rock pool that is fed by the spring water rather than a naturally-occurring spring you might expect.
There are two pools located at Tembeling Beach, but the most popular pool for swimming is the one located down by the beach.
Getting to Tembeling Beach
As with everything on Nusa Penida, to get to the start of the trail to Tembeling Beach you will have to drive yourself, hire a taxi, hire a driver or find a tour that stops by Tembeling Beach.
Once you get to the start of the trail, you can access the beach and spring by either driving a motorbike yourself, getting a motorbike ride from a local (they will be waiting at the top) or walk. I don’t recommend walking; it will take about 30 minutes each way and is quite a steep walk!
Once you get to the bottom of the motorbike trail, be prepared for a short hike down well-paved stairs to get to the beach and springs. There are a little over 200 stairs but they are well-maintained and some of the nicer stairs we climbed while on Nusa Penida!
Is the Motorbike Ride Safe?
Sure, it sounds a little sketchy to jump on the back of a motorbike with a stranger. However, it felt very safe! The trail is wide with a narrow, paved portion that the drivers mostly follow. There are several hills on the path, but the drivers did a great job of navigating them safely. Helmets were provided and encouraged.
Can you Swim at Tembeling Beach?
Unfortunately, Tembeling Beach is NOT good for swimming due to riptides and currents that are unsafe. You can wade in a little, but if you are a fan of playing mermaid and swimming a lot in the ocean, Tembeling Beach won’t be your best option on Nusa Penida. However, the sand and beach area are nice and clean and good for relaxing!
Amenities
There IS a toilet available near the spring. Do know, though, that it is a toilet located in a pretty secluded place, so don’t expect high expectations for the amenities.
Drinks and snacks are available for purchase at the top, prior to hopping on your motorbike as well as a few options for snacks at the bottom. You should have cash if you want to purchase anything!
How Much Time Should You Allot for Visiting Tembeling Beach?
How long you spend here is completely up to you. Again, the ride is about 10 minutes each way and then it takes about 8-10 minutes to walk down to the beach. Obviously, you should allot a little more time for the climb back up due to the incline.
Our timeline for reference:
- We started the motorbike ride around 12:50pm
- Got to the top of the stairs around 1pm (~10 min motorbike ride)
- Made it to the bottom of the stairs by about 1:10pm (~10 minute hike)
- Stayed at the springs for about an hour- Left around 2:15pm
- Made it back to our vehicle by about 2:40pm.
- So, it took us about 2 hours total for the excursion.
Price to Visit Tembeling Beach and Spring
Entrance to Tembeling Beach is technically free, however, if you opt to take a motorbike ride with a local to the bottom, payment/tip is expected. There is not set price, but ~75,000-100,000IDR is typical.
How to Book Your Excursion
If you have your own motorbike, you can do this all on your own! However, if you don’t have your own motorbike, you can book a day tour that will include Tembeling beach or you can hire a driver to take you to Tembeling Beach. There is no pre-booking of the motorbike rides to the bottom of Tembeling Beach; you will simply find a ride when you get to the start of the trail.
However, you can pre-book various Nusa Penida tours that will take you to different spots on the island, Tembeling Beach being one of them. Know that Tembeling Beach is fairly unpopular compared to many other spots on Nusa Penida island, so you will want to verify your tour will stop at Tembeling Beach!
You can also opt to hire a car through Klook for the day, in which you can customize your day and what spots you would like to visit.
What to Wear and Pack for Tembeling Beach and Spring
I recommend wearing your swimsuit to the spring; there are restrooms, but they are rather small. Unlike the Peguyangan Waterfall nearby, a sarong is not required to enter the springs. Wear sturdy shoes you can comfortably climb stairs in, but that are preferably waterproof for the beach and spring.
Pack: Quick-drying towel, cash for tips and for drinks/snacks, sunscreen, and a waterproof phone case isn’t a bad idea!

Tembeling Beach Recap
Again, the motorbike ride and uniqueness of Tembeling Beach with its natural pool were one of my favorite things we did on Nusa Penida! The views at the beach are just stunning and the water is so clear and refreshing!
If you are headed to Tembeling Beach on Nusa Penida, another stop you should make that is close by is the natural infinity pool at Peguyangan Waterfall. Here is everything you will need to know about visiting!
