Is Group Travel Right for You? Should I Stay or Should I Go, Now?
Group travel can be such a valuable form of travel, however, it isn’t for everyone. How do you know if group travel is right for you? Read on for:
- Good candidates for group travel
- Pros and cons of group travel
- An opportunity for you!
Before I delve into the pros and cons, I’ll make it known that group travel is how I began traveling. As a high schooler, I took a trip with teachers abroad on Spring Break in which we had a local guide who navigated the trip and provided extra knowledge about what we were seeing and doing.
I attribute this group trip to my travel addictions now. I am not sure I would have picked up the need to travel or the confidence to travel without this group trip.
Who is Group Travel right for?
By “group travel” I mean taking a trip with an organized travel company, not just taking a trip with a group of friends. Again, these trips are not for everyone, so who are the best candidates for group travel?
Anyone Who hasn’t been abroad
There are loads of learning curves when it comes to traveling internationally. Which documents are required, deciding where to go and what to do, planning the itinerary and booking the accommodations, figuring out how to navigate a new city, and more. So, for anyone who hasn’t done this before, group travel is a great way to dip your toes in and ease yourself into international travel.
Having someone help with all of the logistics and bookings and having a guide throughout the trip is really a confidence booster and eases the fear of international travel!
Solo Travelers
Whether you are intentionally a solo traveller or not, a group trip is a great way to find people to travel with.
Many people who travel the world solo like to join group trips intermittently for new experiences with other travelers.
On the flip side, sometimes it is hard to find people who want to travel. So, if you want to travel, but haven’t found anyone else who would like to travel, group travel is a great option!
A Traveler Wanting A Stress-Free Trip
Planning trips takes quite a bit of time that many people don’t have. There is also a bit of stress while traveling; getting the right transportation, booking activities, etc. So if you have experience traveling abroad, but simply don’t have the time to plan or don’t want to, a group trip is a great option. Group travel is the most stress-free form of travel out there; you just show up and let someone else worry about the trip logistics!
Anyone wanting A New Travel Experience
Group travel is a different kind of experience. From solo travel, or traveling with a partner or family, experiencing a new place with a group of people is different. There is a different camaraderie aspect and memories that can’t be made with other forms of travel!
A Traveler Wanting to Expand Their Travel Community
Travel isn’t for everyone and sometimes, especially when you are from a small town, it is hard to find people who enjoy traveling. But when you develop the want for traveling, it’s nice to have a group of travelers in your corner. Who knows, on a group trip, you may find your next favorite travel companion!
Pros and Cons of Group Trips
As with anything, there are pros and cons to group trips. For some, the good outweighs the bad and for some, it doesn’t. Know what your priorities are with travel!
Pros of Group Travel
Many of the “pros” were mentioned above, but group travel can really have good benefits. Pros:
- Stress-Free Trip
- No planning required. You can show up to your destination and just worry about having a good time
- Local Tour Guide
- Someone is always with you who can speak the language and knows where to go and how to do it best
- Fun!
- Group travel can be a great time! Traveling to a new place with a group of like-minded people can add a spark to a trip that you can’t get on your own. It also can build camaraderie and you may just meet a few new friends!
Cons of Group Travel
In full transparency, as with anything, group travel has its downfalls. There are cons to group travel and it may not be for everyone.
- Price
- Yes, you can likely go book the same trip for cheaper on your own. The price is usually higher with a group trip due to having a local guide and someone else taking care of the logistics of the trip.
- Flexibility
- When you join a group trip, usually the itinerary is set. Most group trips have some “free days” or afternoons in which you can do whatever you want, but the majority of the itinerary is pre-planned. Therefore, if flexibility is important for you, group travel might not be your best option.
- An introverts nightmare?
- Lol, as an introvert myself, I get this one. Ice breakers are the bane of my existence. However, if you are an introvert, I challenge you to step out of your comfort zone and decide if group travel is for you by TRYING it and not assuming you’ll hate it.
