Weather in Amsterdam in October
I covered this in detail in my blog post, Amsterdam in the Autumn. But here is what you can expect for weather in Amsterdam in October.
- Average Temperatures: Highs around 58 degrees F and lows around 45 degrees F
- However, October is a very shoulder-season month, and the temperatures can be quite unpredictable and can change quite a bit from week to week.
- In general, the temperatures will be more mild at the beginning of October and then become more chilly later in October.
- Rain: Amsterdam averages about 9-11 rainy days in October, depending which source you look at. Obviously, rain varies year to year. But know that October is one of the rainiest months of the year in Amsterdam, so don’t be surprised when you get rained on.
- For Reference:
- We visited October 18-24th, 2023:
- One day it rained pretty hard for the morning and early afternoon and finally cleared up pretty late in the afternoon. However, it was the only day out of 5 we got rained on.
- We experienced a couple of days with very pleasant temperatures and afternoon sunshine, although most mornings were pretty chilly.
- One day was pretty cold; low 50’s F with an overcast sky and I wished I had had a base layer under at least my shirt.
- We visited October 18-24th, 2023:
- The weather can very a lot depending on if its is cloudy and overcast or sunny.
- If your forecast is looking like it will be in the 50’s F but with minimal sun and possible mist, you need to pack for cooler weather. The humidity is high in Amsterdam in October, so the “real feel” can be a bit chillier than what the actual temperature is.
What to Wear in Amsterdam in October: Overview
Again, if you read my blog post regarding Amsterdam in the Autumn, you know that Amsterdam is the PERFECT place to go to catch all of the fall vibes. The weather is crisp, the leaves are changing along the beautiful canals, the colors of the building just so happen to match those of an Autumn pallet and it is just the perfect Autumn destination.
- All of this allows for you to have fun with your packing and wear things that match the color pallet of Amsterdam in the Autumn! I recommend packing neutrals, camel browns, blacks, burnt oranges, etc to really compliment your photos in Amsterdam!
However, you also have to be practical about your packing. There is a GOOD chance it is going to rain while you are in Amsterdam in October. You need to have proper shoes and outerwear for those rainy days. Don’t sacrifice your comfort for your photos; find a balance that fits both!

Outer Layers to pack for Amsterdam in the Autumn
Your outerwear can be pretty lightweight as long as you layer underneath. I recommend one water-resistant jacket and one other jacket at least.
- Pea coats are great, lightweight and cute options for your main outer layer option.
- You also want something that is water-resistant. There is a chance you could experience a heavy rain and, even with an umbrella, you will need a rain jacket to keep the rain off. A thin, lightweight trench coat is a great option that will be cute for fall, versatile for outfits and not bulky.
You really won’t need a large, winter coat for Amsterdam in October. The weather is mild enough that if you wear a light sweater with an outer layer you will be fine.

What to Wear in Amsterdam in October: Tops
As I mentioned, the weather in Amsterdam in October is going to be a little moody. You will likely have pretty chilly mornings that warm up into a nice day. Due to the variety of weather and temperatures, I recommend packing long-sleeved shirts in a variety of thicknesses. Short sleeves will probably not be quite enough.
- Light, long-sleeved sweaters/turtle necks are great to wear under your more insulated outer layer.
- A thicker sweater will be great to wear under a thinner, non-insulated water-resistant out layer.

What to Wear in Amsterdam in October: Bottoms
It is definitely long-pant season in October in Amsterdam. Obviously, jeans are a good option, especially a good black pair of jeans that you can match with multiple outfits. However, another, more comfortable, and also very “fall” option for pants is to find corduroy pants.
- Corduroy is a great Autumn material and then if you find some in a tan, cream, camel, or burnt orange color it will really look great in photos! A positive to them is that they are typically more comfortable than a jean material anyway.

Shoes to Bring to Amsterdam in the Autumn
You are going to walk MILES in Amsterdam. Everything is just close enough you can walk to them, but also far enough away that you will put in lots of steps (though biking can cut your steps down 😉). Even if you bike, be sure your shoes are going to hold up to long days on your feet.
I recommend bringing a comfortable sneaker plus something that will hold up to the rain at the least.
- A weather-resistant or at least leather material is a good idea for your sneaker. Either a simple white leather sneaker or even the leather, platform Converse are good options for a casual sneaker that won’t soak up rain water.
- I also recommend a boot that will hold up to the rain. Doc Martins can be a good option as long as you are sure you can walk a lot of miles in them. I also found short, lightweight black rain boots that were affordable on Amazon.

Other essential Items to Pack for Amsterdam in October
Clothing:
- Warm Base Layer: Though I talk about a long sleeve sweater and outer jacket being enough, the weather can be unpredictable. Another item I recommend bringing to Amsterdam is a warm base layer.
- I would pack a top for sure, but its not a bad idea to have a top and bottom that you can slide under your pants if the weather is supposed to be windy or just colder than normal.
- Wool Socks: I also recommend packing some warmer, moisture-wicking socks As I mentioned, it is likely to rain and it will be chilly enough in the mornings that your feet may be cold if you aren’t planning to bring a really insulated shoe.
Other Items:
- Umbrella: It is possible you are going to get caught in a rain that will need more than just a rain jacket with a hood. Take an umbrella and continuing your explorations even if it does!
- Water-Resistant Purse or Bag: This is especially true if you carry a camera, but even without one you don’t want to get your items soaked. Make sure you aren’t carrying your essentials in a bag that will soak up water.

What to Wear in Amsterdam in October Recap
In summary, prepare for weather that can switch from chilly, cloudy, rainy weather to a nice, sunny afternoon pretty quickly. To do this, you want to bring layers and you want to ensure you have something that will keep you dry.
You shouldn’t feel the need to pack winter items such as beanies, gloves and scarves and a large winter coat won’t be necessary either. It won’t be quite that cold.
