What You Should Know Before Visiting Tembeling Beach: How To Get There And More!

Tembeling Beach and natural spring is one of my favorite spots we visited while on Nusa Penida island! The cliffside backdrop over the beach is incredible, but what really makes it unique and sets it apart from the other beaches is the natural spring!

The spring water collects into a beautiful natural pool that is cool, clear and constantly fed. As a bonus, it was pretty quiet when we visited too!

Here is everything you need to know about visiting including how to get there, swimming there, amenities, how much time you need and more!

About Tembeling Beach and Spring

Tembeling Beach (often called Tembeling Beach and Forest) is a beach located on the west side of Nusa Penida with a fresh water spring that feeds into a natural pool.

Unlike the Batur Natural Hot Springs on Bali, Tembeling is a cool, refreshing spring that is fed by water from under the mountain.

The pool is actually a man-made rock pool that is fed by the spring water rather than a naturally-occurring spring you might expect.

There are two pools located at Tembeling Beach, but the most popular pool for swimming is the one located down by the beach.

Getting to Tembeling Beach

As with everything on Nusa Penida, to get to the start of the trail to Tembeling Beach you will have to:

  1. Drive yourself
  2. Hire a taxi
  3. Hire a driver
  4. Find a tour that stops by Tembeling Beach.

Easiest Ways to Get to Tembeling beach on Your Own

Overall, driving on Nusa Penida is a little crazy. The infrastructure isn’t as well-developed as that of Bali and the roads are REALLY WINDY.

Rent a Scooter: If you are brave, you can certainly rent a scooter to get to Tembeling Beach. These are quite affordable, but you just need to be very aware and careful if you opt for this!

Hire a Driver: If you don’t want to tackle hiring a car or scooter, you can hire a driver for the day. This can be a great option to not only see Tembeling Beach, but whatever you prefer!

Hire A Driver!

Via Klook, you can hire a private car where you can customize where you want to go for the day!

Taking A guided Tour to Tembeling Beach

Another way to visit Tembeling Beach is via guided tour. Most tours leave from Bali, so if you don’t plan to stay on Nusa Penida island, this is convenient for you!

However, if you are already on Nusa Penida and want to take a guided tour, you may have to contact the tour company directly.

The guided tours cover “East Nusa Penida” which includes ferry ride from Bali, Tembeling Beach, Diamond Beach, the famous “tree house” and Atuh Beach.

Pros: A guided tour can definitely be the easiest, no stress way to visit Tembleing Beach. Cons: It’ll be the most expensive way to visit and you have to visit all the sights (but they are all worth seeing!)

Getting to the Tembeling Beach from the Trailhead

Once you get to the start of the trail, you can access the beach and spring by either driving a motorbike yourself, getting a motorbike ride from a local (they will be waiting at the top) or walk.

The walk is about 30 minutes and has a pretty good incline, so I really recommend hopping on a motorbike to get there!

Once you get to the bottom of the motorbike trail, be prepared for a short hike down well-paved stairs to get to the beach and springs.

There are a little over 200 stairs but they are well-maintained and some of the nicer stairs we climbed while on Nusa Penida!

Is the Motorbike Ride Safe?

Sure, it sounds a little sketchy to jump on the back of a motorbike with a stranger.

However, it felt very safe!

The trail is wide with a narrow, paved portion that the drivers mostly follow. There are several hills on the path, but the drivers did a great job of navigating them safely. Helmets were provided and encouraged.

Each person got their own driver and scooter and it ended up being a fun, highlight of the trip ☺️

Everything Else to Know about Visiting Tembeling Beach

Now that you are CONVINCED you ned to visit Tembeling Beach, here is everything you need to know while you are there!

Can you Swim at Tembeling Beach?

Unfortunately, Tembeling Beach is NOT good for swimming due to riptides and currents that are unsafe.

You can wade in a little, but if you are a fan of playing mermaid and swimming a lot in the ocean, Tembeling Beach won’t be your best option on Nusa Penida.

However, the sand and beach area are nice and clean and good for relaxing!

Amenities

There IS a toilet available near the spring. Do know, though, that it is a toilet located in a pretty secluded place, so don’t expect high expectations for the amenities (simple toilet, if you will.)

Drinks and snacks are available for purchase at the top, prior to hopping on your motorbike as well as a few options for snacks at the bottom. You should have cash if you want to purchase anything!

Otherwise, everything is all nature and amazing!

How Much Time Should You Allot for Visiting Tembeling Beach?

How long you spend here is completely up to you.

Again, the ride is about 10 minutes each way and then it takes about 8-10 minutes to walk down to the beach. Obviously, you should allot a little more time for the climb back up due to the incline.

Our timeline for reference:

  • We started the motorbike ride around 12:50pm
  • Got to the top of the stairs around 1pm (~10 min motorbike ride)
  • Made it to the bottom of the stairs by about 1:10pm (~10 minute hike)
  • Stayed at the springs for about an hour- Left around 2:15pm
  • Made it back to our vehicle by about 2:40pm.

So, in total we spent about 2 hours total for our excursion.

Price to Visit Tembeling Beach and Spring

Entrance to Tembeling Beach is technically free.

However, if you opt to take a motorbike ride with a local to the bottom, payment/tip is expected. There is not set price, but ~75,000-100,000IDR is typical.

If you are visiting on your own, the only other expense will be getting TO the Tembeling Beach trailhead.

  • If you rent your own scooter, those can be rented for around $5 USD per day.
  • Hiring a driver via Klook is around $40 USD.
  • Guided Tours are around $70 USD per person

What to Wear and Pack for Tembeling Beach and Spring

I recommend wearing your swimsuit to the spring; there are restrooms, but they are rather small. Unlike the Peguyangan Waterfall nearby, a sarong is not required to enter the springs.

Wear sturdy shoes you can comfortably climb stairs in, but that are preferably waterproof for the beach and spring (my favorite are always the Teva Hurricanes!)

What to Pack With you:

  • Quick-drying towel- the smaller, the better. The Sun’y towels are small and dry fast!
  • Cash for tips and for drinks/snacks
  • Sunscreen- Reef safe, preferably. Blue Lizard makes great products, including a stick that is travel-friendly
  • Waterproof phone case- I’ve been using a cheap case from Amazon and its done fine so far

And, of course, have a good bag or backpack to take. I’ve recently purchased to Topo Design small Rover Pack and its super cute and water resistant.

Tembeling Beach Recap

Again, the motorbike ride and uniqueness of Tembeling Beach with its natural pool were one of my favorite things we did on Nusa Penida! The views at the beach are just stunning and the water is so clear and refreshing!

If you are headed to Tembeling Beach on Nusa Penida, another stop you should make that is close by is the natural infinity pool at Peguyangan Waterfall. Here is everything you will need to know about visiting!
